National Treasure 3 in 2010 Nicolas Cage is back as Benjamin Gates

National Treasure 3Walt Disney may not have intended to make a movie franchise out of National Treasure, but one may understand the temptation to make National Treasure 3 following the success of the first two films.

Page 47 Book of Secrets - National Treasure 3The idea of a third movie is also interesting because Benjamin Gates (Nicolas Cage) left us on a cliffhanger issue at the end of the second movie. Indeed when asked about page 47 of the book of secret in National Treasure 2, Benjamin Gates mysteriously answered that it was 'life-altering'! For the trivia: I heard that the 'life-altering' scene was some improvisation from Nicolas Cage.

But damned, such ending should be forbidden! Now we are starving for more answers because of this 'life-altering' issue. Director Jon Turteltaub responded in a press interview that the idea was not set in stone as the basis for National Treasure 3, even stating that it could actually be an introduction for National Treasure 4...

Both Director Turteltaub and Benjamin Gates both acknowledged their interest in pursuing the adventures of Benjamin Gates. Still quite long to wait before the release of National Treasure 3 though. For now the movie is only slated for a 2010 release...

It is because the script of National Treasure 3 is still under works.

But three main rumors have emerged on the Internet about National Treasure 3:

Fountain of Youth - National treasure 3

Fountain of YouthThe first rumor is about Benjamin Gates going in a quest the legendary Fountain of Youth, searched for in Florida by Ponce de Leon.

But then there would be a problem with the plot Pirates of the Caribbean 4 said to be also based on the Fountain of Youth. So even if this rumor is well spread I believe it is the less likely to be true.

Atlantis - National treasure 3

Another potential plot floating on the interweb is about Benjamin Gates going to Easter Island to hunt for Atlantis. The story would involve some mysterious clean energy source that would save the world from global warming.

This new plot may be a bit farfetched, it sounds as strange as the aliens in Indiana Jones 4 actually... But Nicolas Cage said that he'd like to see the movie going abroad again, like some International Treasure.

The Roanoke Colony - National treasure 3

This information comes from a source who is believed to be an assistant writer of the National Treasure franchise:

The Page 47 of National Treasure 2 actually involves a quest to find the lost colony of Roanoke, North Carolina (the colony that disappeared in 1585). The lost colony is said to be the "holding place" of the grandest treasure of all (even better than the city of gold). The treasure has yet to be revealed but it is supposed to be the best of all time. Area 51 could have been involved but Disney vetoed the idea as being too sci-fi. The colony plot may still go on with some other mysterious treasure though.

I doubt that National Treasure 3 has any chance to be released sooner than 2010 (even think 2011...) because of the undergoing economic crisis. But I would be so glad if it was released earlier than expected! Impatient to see National Treasure 3.

I dont think I can wait that long for the next instalment! I love the whole idea and am an avid treasure hunter myself. Though I havnt found anything resembling the city of gold... yet... its amazing what you can find out with a little research. I am currently on the trail of some tins of Australian gold soveriegns buried in a small sandstone cave in an area that I cannot disclose. Im quite excited by the information I have recieved. The only family member alive, told me the story of how her two brothers buried the coins before going off world war I. Sadly they never returned, and the mother and sister of the boys could never find them. Apparently the gully is quite treacherous and is riddled with snakes. Sounds like a perfect spot for hiding treasure and should be a great adventure. Wish Nic Cage join me on the hunt. Will let you know how I go.

I hope especially my daughter (and son) would love to see The Roanoke Colony version since they have study Roanoke in history. She is now very interested in the mystery and one day would love to solve the mystery.

I mentioned awhile back on some website that the 3rd National Treasure should be based on the "City of Atlantis."
In my vision this city is underwater between Florida and Africa...hense the cause for the disappearance of many ships and planes in the Bermuda Triangle. These missing ships and planes have vanished as a result of the electromagnetic field the peace loving beings in the City of Atlantis use as a source of energy and sometimes these planes and ships have been caught in it's activity, however they aren't actually lost...they have been transported to the Golden City of Atlantis.
There's so much more I could add to my version of the story, but I'll leave it up to the producers of the National Treasure movie.

I'm really excited to see a third national treasure, just watched the first and second movie today. AMAZING movies, very exciting.
I just hope they get the original cast, it's never the same when series go on with a new cast acting as the same characters.

But besides that, I think Atlantis or the The Roanoke Colony would be great. Maybe have one be the 3rd movie, and the other the 4th.

I really hope they don't do the fountain of youth, or anything else sort of sci-fi or fantasy. National Treasure, while something that would basically never happen, it possibly could, or could have. But a magical fountain to make you younger, or something else that couldn`t happen, would really taint the series for me. There is a actual real chance someone could find the city of atlantis, it could have existed and be somewhere. But you couldn`t find a magical fountain that will make you young.

Another interesting vision I have that would be good in this movie would be the discovery of Noah's Ark, the Ark of the Covenant, the tablets containing the Ten Commandments...all located in the City of Atlantis. These beings in this city are the protectors of these artifacts.

I hope they do the Fountain of Youth. I've never heard of treasure in connection with the Roanoke colony, and as much as I would love for Atlantis to be "discovered", I don't want to see the cracked out, sci-fi version of it they present. Someone mentioned the Fountain of Youth was a terrible plot line because it couldn't exist. Now, I don't think that is necessarily true and before you think I'm crazy, let me explain. Legend particularly when it is a primarily oral tradition, is easily altered. Think of all of the variations we have for fairy tales, and those are written down. Why couldn't Gates find the Fountain of Youth and have it be something totally amazing, but physically plausible?

Like some others, I want a tomorrow release! But again, like others, for now I just have to speculate and wait. Here is my two cent theory:
First off, lets get rid of the Fountain of Youth idea. Jerry Bruckheimer does both NT and the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series and to have the the FOY possibility in both movies being released in roughly the same time frame (an expected 2010-12 for NT3 and Pirates 4) would be ridiculous.

Now in the previous films, one historical event led to another and so on. We know for a fact it cant be the whole alien thing (Poole already mentioned it)and everybody knows Area 51 is there anyway. Since in NT2 the request for Gate's help is coming from the President, it would HAVE to be an international affair otherwise the government would have done it already. The Roanoke theory was mentioned as the possible story for NT2 before its release. Could this be an introduction to the overall find for NT3?. Granted its important, but not 'life changing'. Sort of like the previous two films (hint, hint).
Lets try this on for size: How about a possible connection of the colony AND Atlantis. This would bring both myths together with historic facts for support. There is certainly a lot of material to fill this possibility: How/why the colony disappeared with almost no trace; the predictions of Edgar Cacey and his secretive 'client list' which was referred by numbers only; The real-life documented chamber under the right front Sphinx paw which the Egyptian government will not allow any further excavation which gives the international element, and so on. Also as documented fact was the rumor that after the Roanoke disappearance, caucasian children were seen with Native American tribes on hunting parties near the area. This possible scenario would explain how in NT2 the President suddenly remembered 'Page 47' only after he and Gates discussed the 'Greatest Native American Treasure'/City of Gold which would be a very plausible tie-in to both movies.

I realize I can't give a better connection for the two but I'll leave that to those with more imagination.

they should make 1 on the texas revolution and have clues like in the alamo and then in san jacinto and stuff i think it would b interesting

I think that National Treasure 3 should be based on Page 47. Because everyone wants to know about page 47. S I'm hoping it's about page 47. But I'm glad there is a 3rd movie.

I think it should be about the pirates/privaters. Do you realize how much treasure was stolen in the name of goverment. Were did all go. Treasure is still said to be buried in the Coastal regions of the US.

Wow.. If the National Treasure search happens in China! It'll have to do with the great wall of China, the Terra Cotta And the legendary "longevity and you potion" by Qin Emperor. It'll be some kind of treasure right? Living near-forever? (I'm not from China though)

i want to see it now mister!!!!!!!

I don't think they should wait. Econimic uncertinaties have nothing to do with it. Have you been to a movie theather lately...people are still going. And if it's a GOOD movie, people will go. My daughter checks the internet every week to see if there is word about it.
She loves Nicolas Cage.

Thank you for making a series of movies that are clean enough for my kids but entertaining enough for adults. My seven year old (whose name is Ben!) LOVES the National Treasure movies and so do I. He wants to go to DC and see the Library of Congress (even though he knows there is no secret book). These movies inspire kids to explore more about our nation's history! Thank you. Karen.

I'm not sure about the whole "Atlantis" theory...I mean, we're hunting "national" treasures here. I like the sound of the Roanoke idea, except I thought the film series was moving in a different direction: the first movie largely has to do with the American Revolution, America's first major war. The second movie was involved in the American Civil War, America's second major conflict. So why wouldn't the third movie take place during America's third major conflict? Something like either the Spanish-American War, or World War I or II.

The "life-altering" comment made by Mr. Gates at the end of the movie could mean that this new quest is for something that almost everyone has heard stories of...the treasure of El Dorado maybe? I read a book once, Clive Cussler's "Cyclops" where the treasure of El Dorado wasn't an entire city of gold but rather a very large gold statue with jewels encrusted, etc. I realize this wouldn't be as big as the previous two treasures, but who hasn't heard of El Dorado? (Prior to the movie, who's ever heard of Cibola, for that matter.)

After watching NT2 over and over again I really feel there are going to be carry overs into NT3. There are clues to the next movie all through NT2. When Mitch Wilkinson is sitting with Dr. Nichols looking at the plank the scene begins with " I didn't sign on for that " They never explain what " that " is. Next, Ben Gates mentions that Sadusky new more about the book than he originally thought. Now the big clue. When Wilkinson arrives at mount Rushmore and is met by Gates, Wilkinson asks Ben why he would agree to his terms and Ben replies " Because you need that treasure, believe me I know " This is also why there is such hesitation between Ben and the president at the end when Willkinsons name is mentioned. Also we are assuming that Mitch Wilkinson is dead, but that water has to go somewhere? Hmmmm Just some food for thought!

I am excited to see the third installment of the National Treasure series, and believe the beginning og the title "National treasure" isures that it will be linked to American History in some large fashion, but I am curious as to whether or not anyone has questioned Gates' mother beingin in NT2. In NT1, Ben father Patrick, references the mother and says "God rest her soul" I may be mistaken but that means she's dead right?

I enjoy every movie Nicholas Cage has made. However, this series is very interesting and my kids enjoyed both I and II. My husband and I have watched it several times over and over because each time we find something different. I studied Roanake many, many years ago when I was in grade school and I would love to find out more about it.

I really like the way that each National Treasure follows a pattern in history, that finally leads to another adventure and then to the final destination. I have always enjoyed History and went to Washington D.C. while in grade school, but never had the pleasure to get to see the Library of Congress. Now our two younger children want to go to Washington D.C., to see the desk - the White House, the Library of Congress and other Historical sites.

However, I cannot wait until number III comes out, I wish it would come out early than 2010. The entire cast in I and II play excellent roles that fit their characters. I hope many of them will be included in III and if you ever make a number IV as well.

Very entertaining for the entire family. Cannot wait to see it.

I would like to point out something that I noticed in NT2 that may be a clue to what NT3 may be about. Ben Gates was talking to Riley about his arguments with Dr. Chase and he used the word "so" a lot. Also at the end of NT2 when Ben Gates was talking to Dr. Chase after they found the City of Gold, he used the word "so" a lot. When the actors said this word, they put such an emphasis on the word "so" that I believe it is a clue as to what the plot will be about in NT3. I feel that the word "so" may not be "so", but "sew" as in something you sew, like an American flag. I would also like to know which President wrote page 47. That would be a clue wo what events may take place in NT3. I love all the NT movies...keep them coming!

I saw a documentary about fort knox on the History Channel, which mentioned it was the subject of a new National Treasure movie. The show was on T.V. not too long ago. I don't know how much truth there is in that?

I absolutely love the NT series and have repeatedly watched them. I wouldn't mind seeing more international elements added but really think it will be essential that it is relevant to American History as that is the focus of the series thus far. Roanoke would definitely be an interesting story line and it plausibly could be connected to a Native American story line or Atlantis or both. Especially since the mystery surrounding Roanoke leaves a lot of historical connections to be made.

Secondly someone mentioned that Ben's father said "God rest her soul" in reference to Ben's mother in NT1, but really he said "At least I had your mother, for however long a time, at least I have you, and what do you have him?" This is the only real reference to a mother in the first film. It is made when Ben first goes to his father's house in search of the letters from Benjamin Franklin. So it makes sense that his mother is alive in the second just hasn't spoken to his father in 30 years.

Either way I am very impatient for a third installment and can not wait. I teach Civics and Economics and my students love talking about these movies when we read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. It has made American History "cool" for lack of a better word.

Does anyone know if there has been some recent updates on NT3?

From everything that I've read from history, the Roanoke mystery is "solved", or strongly believed to have been through the work of science and DNA. A group of Native American Indians were believed to have attacked the settlement and taken some of the women and/or children into their tribe. This also follows suite with some traditions of Native American Indians where they take a captive to "regain" the loss of any of their own lost in battle. DNA has helped prove this, from what I believe, when children were born with characteristics common of Europeans (i.e blue eyes). I strongly hope they don't do the "mystery" of Roanoke. It, in my mind, already has enough facts to not make it a mystery, and I've already seen a couple spin off's of "what-if"s (a supernatural aspect was the most interesting).

I hope they don't do the Fountain of Youth or Atlantis either... The history pertaining to those are so far-spread and diluted with other culture's lore and characteristics, it'd seem a little far-fetched.

Nonetheless, I do have high expectations for the movie! As long as Disney acknowledges when it lacks the Adventure/History and is sneaking over into Sci-Fi/Fantasy (*Indy IV*), I'll continue to wait for the movie's arrival!

Thank god the directors and writers arnt going to head down the path of sci-fi like Indiana jones did, it was the biggest waste of money since epic movie. I think with a franchise like this there are so many myths that it could ultimatly go on for ages, and seeings as the last 2 were good i hope they do.

Anonymous said...

Roanoke is a interesting subject to want to this movie on. On one hand it would be good to see them continue with the American history aspect of the franchise. But on the other hand Roanoke is a b.s myth. If anyone just does a little bit a reasearch would realize the truth behind it. When the Europeans returned to Roanoke all that was left was a carving on a tree that said Croatan. Turns out Croatan is an island right of the coast of Roanoke and a few years after they came back little light skinned natives were found on Roanoke....so yea do the math there. Im thinkin the settler probably got sick of tryin to figure how to live and went and made some friends. So I hope they go a different direction than Roanoke.

Many forget that it was Thomas GATES who was assigned to go to ROANOKE to search for the Last Colony of Roanoke. There is much amiss about the survival of the colony..Sir William Strachey and John Smith among others wrote of the missing Roanoke Colonist among the tribes along the James and Chowan Rivers.
Even rumors among Jamestowne. How fascinating…Would love to discuss.. :D

The Bermuda Triangle…Atlantis theory has been around a long time too..The Sea Venture did survive its journey and made it to Jamestowne months later. But many also forget the “COLONY” Triangle too…Jamestowne, Yorketowne, Williamsburg…that lead to the Freemasons. ;D

I've really enjoyed reading all of the posts above and I share a lot of enthusiasm about the NT series, I guess because I have a kid's sense of fantasy with an adult's capacity for appreciating history. I enjoyed both movies and appreciate the contextualized history aspects of the films a great deal. The rumors of an international version including something linked to China are interesting to consider, and although not well known there is a lot of mystery and history behind the Chinese Gold Bar Cipher. This is a famous unsolved encryption problem (Right up Ben Gates' alley). According to the story, in the early 1930's, seven gold bars (representing what experts think are metal certificates)were issued for a U.S. bank deposit in the amount of 300 million dollars. The bars themselves have a series of pictures on them, some Chinese writing, a series of cryptic script writing, and cryptograms written in Latin letters. The cryptograms have never actually been deciphered. the history linking the 1930's era US and China could be related to page 47. Could Hitler coming to power be involved... who knows? Check out the Chinese Gold Bar Cipher on the web. It is interesting even if not the focus of NT3. At any rate, I'm glad they're doing another film and can't wait to see it.

I was thinking it would be awesome to have it refer to lost treasures like those stolen by Blackbeard and lost when the Queen Anne's Revenge sunk off the coast of North Carolina or possibly using the lost Nazi gold and art treasures stolen during the second World War. American G.I.'s could have found the treasure, reported the find and then had their unit wiped out leaving the treasure buried and rightfully the property of the USA as spoils of war just waiting for an american team of treasure hunters to rediscover all of the gold and art masterpieces Hitler wanted to closet away for any number of crazy reasons!

I like the idea of the lost colony or some link to colonial life like maybe even the witch trials? One thing is certain, aliens would be ridiculous unless it linked the disappearance of the great civilizations of the Maya and the Moche and others with the Roanoke colony and aliens. I know I can't wait and the movie won't be out soon enough from my point of view!

I love these movies. Mostly because I am a big enthusiast of American history, so I really hope that National Treasure 3 doesn't go more international and says on "National Treasure" ... like the title of the movie says. While they did go to a few foreign sites in the second film, they were all intertwined with unique American things (Statue of Liberty & Resolute Desk)

Based on the first two movies, it seems that all their treasures revolve around an American war. The first being the Revolutionary War and the second being the Civil War. So it would seem they should base the treasure around the time period of some American war, and personally I think they should base it around the War of 1812. The war of 1812 has been called the true test of our revolution, and it is also filled with incredible history and historical figures. You got James Madison, Andrew Jackson, the burning of The White House.
I think they could make a story somewhat revolving around Dolly Madison saving the famous Washington portrait and a few other items from the White House before the British attacked. They could make one of the other lesser known objects saved have to do with some kind of treasure, maybe saying that this treasure was part of the real reason the British attacked again or something.

Those are just some thoughts of mine. I really hope they don't make the third one about anything like Area 51 or The Fountain of Youth or anything like that. Everything in the movies so far have been based on real historical things, I really hope they don't make the same mistake Indiana Jones did and go too scifi with the third movie.
I also hope they learn from Indiana Jones and just leave the National Treasure franchise as a (hopefully) really good trilogy.

Just my thoughts, can't wait to see what they come up with and see the film!

OK. I can't wait for National Treasure 3 to come out. Alot of people might not notice when watching National Treasure 2 but when Ben Gates takes a piture of page 47, it does in fact regard Area 51. When it zooms in on his cell phone, you can see the numbers 51 on the top of the page. I took the liberty of putting it into my computer and enhanced it. It was pretty cool to hoping that it could give clues to the next movie. If you can somehow enhance it should be interesting for you to read. Good Luck and have fun treasure hunting.

You do forget your history. George Washington was the First President of the United States of America. The Colony Triangle made up of Williamsburg, York and Jamestowne. Thomas Gates was assigned to go and search for the Lost Colony of Roanoke.

The Lost Colony of Roanoke was never truly lost. Even Jamestowne knew they were along the rivers, and in tribes.
You also have to remember that 20 yeares passed between John’s White’s return to England during the War with the Spanish Armada. How exciting that perhaps one day, those theories can be dissolved.

Atlantis is a interesting debate..being that Sir Francis Bacon had his own theories…the hint of masonic paradise among the Bermuda Triangle… hmm

Ramel said...

If anything to do with the Gates families, it would certainly take them back to the New World… of course there were many things that were brought to the New World back then. All quest were and are, all men’s endeavor.

As far as President George Washington being linked to a great mystery of his adventures along the Rappahannock River where he grew up, there is great mystery and stories of the The Lost Colony of Roanoke. Especially of those out of Jamestown where they knew the lost colonists were alive among the tribes. Thomas Gates was sent to look for these colonists.
The Colony Triangle was Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown. The Triangle was also significant among masons… including President George Washington.

I just watched the 2nd NT once again today, I can't stop watching them. The actors do an excellent job and I hope they all return for the 3rd movie but what I really enjoy is how exciting the NT movies make history. History has always interested me, but these movies connect history to the modern day, bring histroy to life, and the search for treasure makes the movie intense and action filled. History is so important because it teaches us who we were in the past and we can use the past to improve what we do in the future. These movies allow people to become connected with our nation's history while sitting on the edge of their seat during a car chase and waiting to see where Ben goes next. I can not wait for the 3rd movie, and I hope that the 3rd one has some more historical flashbacks like the one in the beginning of the 2nd movie, this brings even more history into the moive. I also really like the action that the movies contain because that adds some suspense and keeps viewers interested. I do hope that the story has nothing to do with the foutain of youth or area 51, and that is does focus on American history. The Roanoke Colony is an interesting idea but as a few people have said it really isn't a mystery. Though if it was chosen it could be interesting to add many flashbacks throughout the movie showing people how the colonists lived. There could also be some connections made to the Spanish in Florida at the time, as well as Raleigh from England. As long as the movie is not too far-fetched and doesn't start to loose its true historical connection that the previous movies have had, then I'm sure it will be another amazing NT movie. Can't wait!
